Are therapy dogs allowed in stores in the UK?

Not always. Assistance dogs have legal rights under the Equality Act 2010, but therapy dogs and emotional support animals do not.

What’s the difference?

Assistance dogs (such as guide dogs or service dogs for people with disabilities) must be allowed in shops and public places by law.

Therapy dogs or emotional support animals don’t have the same legal protection. Stores can refuse entry unless the dog is also a trained assistance dog.

Policies vary, so it’s best to check with individual stores before visiting.
