The stories behind the numbers

Compassion, refuge, a chance to open up

After very sadly losing her son to suicide, Ylang and her husband were offered help from Rethink Surrey Support After Suicide. The service proved to be a great comfort to them, helping them to come to terms with the loss and find a way forward.

In memory of her son, Gem, she will be fundraising for Rethink and taking on an amazing marathon through the Sahara Desert.

Rethink Surrey Support After Suicide provided us with compassionate refuge, a safe space where we could openly express our feelings and thoughts, truly heard and supported without judgement. They consistently showed genuine care for us, always ensuring that we were okay and that everything aligned with our best interests. I was able to utilise their counselling and therapy services, which significantly helped me to cope with the trauma.

Kindness, sensitivity, a listening ear

After facing stress-induced psychosis in 2007, Ruth then developed postpartum psychosis in 2019. While she was sanctioned, one of Rethink’s advocates supported her and her rights, and helped her stand up for herself and her care.

He always listened intently, knew what outcome I wanted and how to get there. He helped me with pacing my words, so I could show my strengths to the clinicians. He believed in me and my capabilities. He was kind, sensitive, funny and crucial to my recovery. I felt powerful with him and listened to. Without him, I think my hospital stay would’ve been considerably longer.

Understanding, no judgement, deep connection

Joanne’s experience of menopause saw a decline in her mental health that left her isolated. After educating herself about menopause and finding a welcoming community in the Rethink Wiltshire Inclusion Service, she began to rebuild her confidence and find moments of joy.

The Happy Café was a space where I could share openly without judgement. Talking with others who understood my struggles was reassuring and deeply healing. I learned that suffering in silence only deepens the pain. By connecting with a community, I found comfort and strength in knowing I wasn’t alone.
