We respond to announcement of independent review into prevalence of mental illness
04 December 2025
The government has announced a review into the prevalence of and support for mental health conditions, ADHD and autism.
Mark Winstanley, Chief Executive of Rethink Mental Illness, said:
“Long waits for mental health care are unacceptable, impacting people’s daily lives and putting some at risk of crisis. With 1.8 million people currently waiting for support, this review must lead to action. This is a vital opportunity to understand rising demand and improve access to accurate diagnosis and timely, effective support.
“Greater awareness and reduced stigma have encouraged more people to seek support - a public health success. But the pressures of the pandemic, the cost-of-living crisis, and widening social and health inequalities have undoubtedly placed strain on people’s mental wellbeing. While more people are presenting with symptoms of distress, this does not necessarily mean inappropriate diagnosis or the ‘medicalisation’ of normal human experience. Language matters: we must ensure people feel safe and not discouraged from seeking the support they need.
“We welcome the review’s evidence-based approach and the involvement of people with lived experience. Their voices are essential, and we stand ready to support Prof Fonagy and Sir Simon Wessely in this important work.”
