Hearing voices, also known as auditory hallucinations, is a unique experience for each person. Here are some of the ways voices might present themselves: 

  • Familiar or unfamiliar: Voices may sound like people you know, or they might be completely new. 
  • Different genders and ages: Some voices sound male or female, adult or child. 
  • Location of the sound: Voices can seem to come from inside your head or from outside, as if someone is speaking nearby. 
  • Languages and accents: You might hear voices in different languages or with various accents. 
  • Volume and tone: Voices can whisper, shout, or speak at a normal volume. 
  • Content: They may say positive, negative, or neutral things. Sometimes, voices talk to you directly, talk about you, or even talk to each other. 
  • Other sounds: It’s not always speech. Some people hear music, animal noises, or background sounds like people chatting or cars passing by. 

How hearing voices can make you feel 

The experience of hearing voices can change over time. Some people find the voices encouraging and helpful, while others may find them upsetting or hurtful. The intensity and frequency of voices can also shift, especially during stressful periods.
