Are eating disorders genetic?

Eating disorders can run in families, but genes are only part of the story. Having a relative with an eating disorder does not mean you will develop one.

What we know about genetics and eating disorders

Some research shows that eating disorders, like other mental health conditions, can be more common in some families. This suggests that genetics may play a role.

It’s not just about genes

Researchers do not fully understand why eating disorders are passed down. It’s likely to be a mix of genetic, environmental and personal factors. Family history is just one piece of the puzzle.

You are not defined by your family history

Having a family member with an eating disorder does not mean you will experience one yourself. Everyone’s experience is unique.
