5 warning signs of depression
People can experience different symptoms, but five warning signs of depression are: persistent low mood, loss of interest in activities, low energy, disturbed sleep or appetite, and feelings of guilt or worthlessness.
1. Persistent low mood
Feeling sad, irritable, or angry most of the day, nearly every day, is a key sign of depression. This mood can last for weeks and may not improve, even with positive events.
2. Loss of interest in activities
You might stop enjoying things you used to love, such as hobbies, socialising, or work. This loss of interest can make life feel flat or empty.
3. Reduced energy and tiredness
Depression often brings a constant sense of tiredness. Everyday tasks can feel overwhelming or exhausting, even after rest.
4. Disturbed sleep and changes in appetite
You may find it hard to fall asleep, wake up too early, or sleep much more than usual. Appetite can also change, leading to weight loss or gain.
5. Feelings of guilt, worthlessness, or low self-confidence
People with depression often feel guilty about things that aren’t their fault, or believe they are worthless. Self-confidence can drop, making it hard to cope with daily life.
When to seek help
If you or someone you know has these symptoms most of the day, every day, for more than two weeks, it’s important to seek support from a healthcare professional. Learn more about talking to your GP about your mental health here.
