We deliver several Individual Placement and Support (IPS) programmes across the country. We spoke to Laura, the head of the service in Durham, to find out more about what the service can offer.

In collaboration with the North East Combined Authority, Laura’s team are supporting people in Durham who have some kind of barrier to employment get back into work. These barriers could be physical, mental, or more complex, and our employment specialists are here to help work out the best way forward. As well as supporting people to find work, the IPS programme can also offer up to four months of support to people who are in work but at risk of losing their job.

Working collaboratively with referral organisations and throughout communities, the team takes a holistic approach, providing opportunities for onward referrals to help people in all aspects of life. This helps to build a full picture of a secure lifestyle, helping people to remain well and in work.

When referred to the service, people have the opportunity to work with one of our amazing employment specialists for up to 12 months. Our employment specialists have lower caseloads compared to other services, which means they can really take the time to get to know the person. This includes finding out about previous work experience, current skills and knowledge, and personal goals and employment preferences. From there, the team can then personalise their approach to ensure the individual gets the right support. This might include upskilling, help with CV writing, practising interview techniques or providing money and benefits advice. Support doesn’t end once the individual is employed either! Our employment specialists support both the employer and employee, exploring any difficulties that may arise and discussing reasonable adjustments to make sure roles are sustainable.

A holistic approach is at the heart of all our IPS services, and as Laura puts it:

  • We are not looking at how the person fits the role, but we are looking at how the role fits the person.

Of course, having a supportive job that aligns with your goals is a big factor in someone’s wellbeing. Thank you to the team for making that possible in Durham.
