What is a mental health fit note? 


A mental health fit note is a document from your doctor that explains you are not fit for work due to a mental health condition.

Sometimes called a “sick note” or “doctor’s note”, a mental health fit note can also include advice for your employer about changes or support that could help you get back to work.

How does a fit note work? 

Who provides it? Your GP or hospital doctor will give you a fit note if they believe your mental health makes it difficult for you to work.

What does it include? The note will state that you are not fit for work. It may also suggest adjustments, such as flexible hours, working from home, or a phased return.

Why is it important? You may need a fit note to claim statutory sick pay or to arrange workplace adjustments. It helps your employer understand your situation and what support you might need.

Using a fit note for mental health 

Share with your employer: Give your fit note to your employer as soon as possible. This helps them support you and make any necessary changes at work.
