Does a person with multiple personality disorder know they have it?

People with Dissociative Identity Disorder (DID), previously called multiple personality disorder, may not always know they have the condition.

What is Dissociative Identity Disorder?

DID is a mental health condition where a person experiences two or more distinct identities or personality states. It often comes with memory gaps, feeling disconnected from your own body, and confusion about personal information or events.

Are people with DID aware of their condition?

Many people with DID are not fully aware they have it. The symptoms, such as memory loss, dissociation, and changes in identity, can make it hard to recognise what’s happening.

Some people may only realise after seeking professional help or doing their own research. DID is often misdiagnosed, so it can take years to get the right support.

When should you seek help?

If you notice frequent memory gaps, dissociation, or feel like you have more than one identity, and these experiences are distressing, it’s important to reach out to a mental health professional.
