Many carers of people with mental illness worry that when they die, the person they care for might have challenges with their finances.

Rethink Trust Corporation is a company created by Rethink Mental Illness that understands the needs of people with mental illness.

Made up of a voluntary board of directors with experience of mental health issues, they work in partnership with qualified legal and finance experts, Arcadia Trust Group, to deliver a service that gives peace of mind that your loved one’s inheritance will be secure.

Your loved one won't need to be burdened with managing an inheritance on their own, and if they are vulnerable, the inheritance will be protected from third parties and protect means-tested benefits.

A unique service for people living with mental illness

Our simple, reliable service lets you set up a trust fund (also known as a discretionary trust fund) for your loved one which can ensure their future inheritance is looked after.

Unlike other providers, we understand the needs of people with lived experience of mental illness. Because the scheme is run by the Rethink Mental Illness charity in partnership with Arcadia Trust Group you can be sure that the people charged with making decisions understand the circumstances and needs of people who are affected by severe mental illness.

For over 50 years we have brought people together to support each other - we believe that a better life is possible for the millions of people affected by mental illness.

We currently manage around 350 trusts. The wishes of the settlors (the person who created the trust), and the lifelong benefit to people with mental illness is at the heart of everything we do at Rethink Trust Corporation.

A trust costs £500+VAT to set up and you would need to provide proof of identification for all parties to ensure we comply with the Money Laundering Regulations.

Frequently asked questions

A discretionary trust is where the trustee has the authority to decide how to distribute the fund to the beneficiary. Unlike fixed trusts, where distributions are predetermined, discretionary trusts offer flexibility, allowing the trustee to consider the beneficiaries' needs and circumstances. Beneficiaries do not have a fixed entitlement, making the trust adaptable to changing circumstances.
We work with Arcadia Trust Group who take care of the accounting, tax and legal side of things in setting up a trust. Partners of Arcadia Trust Group have a wealth of tax and trust knowledge, including an in-depth knowledge of Rethink Trust Corporation. One of the partners of Arcadia Trust Group, Steven Howells, has worked with us for many years so you can be reassured he understands both the law relating to trust funds as well as the complexities of mental illness.

The provider for the majority of trust investment portfolios is Rathbones. In addition, we work with a broad range of financial advisors and other firms as is appropriate to the circumstances of each trust.
When assets from your estate pass into the trust, we will contact your beneficiary directly to introduce ourselves. We will then let them know how they can contact us to request payments from the fund. They can contact us either by calling a dedicated telephone number, e-mailing us or in writing. We will ask them questions about their request and the directors of Rethink Trust Corporation and any other trustee will make a decision about whether or not to release the funds.
Robert Banner OBE – Chairman (born 1942)

Robert is an Australian Chartered Accountant who has been a director and shareholder of a number of private companies in UK, Europe and the USA. He is a former trustee of Rethink Mental Illness and was Chair of its Board for 6 years. He has also served on the board of several other charities. He cares for a family member with mental illness and has direct personal experience of the issues relating to trust beneficiaries.

Ian Cuddington – Director (born 1980)

Ian Cuddington was born in Derby in 1980 and after studying Chemistry at Oxford University, he joined Rolls-Royce. Today Ian is the Director of Economic Development for Rolls-Royce Group, leading on global public investment in support of the company’s activities. Ian is a member of the aerospace trade association ADS Council and represents Rolls-Royce at the Aerospace Growth Partnership Board. He is also a member of the University of Derby Business School Council.

Ian is a keen runner and has participated in a several races and marathons raising money for charity. Mental illness has affected several people he is close to, including family members.

Angela Gillibrand – Director (born 1949)

After attending Oxford University, Angela joined a stockbrokers firm as an investment analyst. Following an MBA, she specialised in Finance and worked for Burmah Oil as a senior management accountant. At Cranfield University, she was the Finance Director for the contract to run the Army’s University at Shrivenham. Since 2003, she has combined several non-executive roles in the public and not for profit sectors with some charity trusteeships and a family farming and property business.

Barrie Gray – Director (born 1954)

Barrie cares for a close family member who has a mental illness so understands the needs of trust beneficiaries. He served in the Royal Air Force as a Senior Officer, is a Chartered Engineer by profession and has served on commercial Boards in the recent past. He now runs his own Consultancy Business. He joined the RTC Board of directors in 2010.

George Hook (Born 1952)

George has been a member of our Audit and Quality Assurance Committee since 2012 and joined our Board of Trustees in 2016 and became its Treasurer in 2017. In 2020 he was appointed Vice-chair, taking over from Shaun Johnson. Now retired, George is an accountant with over 30 years’ experience of internal audit and risk management, which was gained in senior management roles in retail banking and local government.

Chitra Khatri (Born 1985)

Chitra is an investment professional at J.P. Morgan Asset Management in London, specializing in advising both for-profit and non-profit institutions. Emerging from a modest family background, Chitra's path through the finance sector has deeply influenced her professional ethos, fostering a commitment to financial inclusivity and a desire to give back to the community. She holds a master’s degree in economics from Mumbai University and a CFA charter holder.

Chitra is an avid biker and travel enthusiast, whose adventures mirror her dynamic and community-oriented approach to both life and her career in finance.

Tod Merson – Director (born 1954)

Tod managed a mixed farm in Somerset, before becoming an agricultural lawyer at the age of 40. He has been a trustee for several family trusts, as well as for a large estate in Devon. He now volunteers with the Farming Community Network, which supports farmers who find themselves in difficulty. This often involves mental health issues. He has experience of caring for someone with mental illness.

Mark West – Director (born 1944)

Mark practiced as a solicitor in Bristol and London, and thereafter as a barrister in London from 1973. He specialised mainly in property, but with early experience in other civil areas including family and crime. Recent experience has included some Court of Protection work. He has 25 years’ experience as a Recorder of the Crown Court. He is a CEDR qualified and practicing mediator. Mark was a guardian of 2 family minors and trustee of family trusts.
