Why do I hear someone calling my name?
Hearing your name when no one is there is common and usually not a sign of mental illness. It can happen for many reasons, including stress, tiredness, or past experiences.
What causes this?
Stress and anxiety
When life feels overwhelming, your mind can play tricks. Stress and anxiety sometimes make you hear things, including your name.
Past trauma
Difficult memories can linger. If you’ve been through trauma, your mind may process it in unexpected ways, like hearing voices.
Lack of sleep
Not getting enough rest can affect your brain. Sleep deprivation may lead to hearing sounds that aren’t real.
Physical health
Some medical conditions, such as infections or neurological issues, can cause auditory hallucinations.
Mental health
Hearing voices can be linked to conditions like psychosis or schizophrenia, but it’s not always the case. Many people hear voices at some point, and it doesn’t mean you have a mental health disorder.
Is it always a sign of mental illness?
No. Hearing voices is a unique experience and isn’t always linked to mental illness. The voices can be positive, negative, or neutral. Everyone’s experience is different.
When should I seek support?
If hearing voices is upsetting or affects your daily life, it’s important to reach out. Speaking to a mental health professional can help.
