Section 37 of the Mental Health Act - Hospital orders

If you are convicted of a crime, the courts can send you to hospital instead of prison. The courts can do this under Section 37 of the Mental Health Act 1983, if you have a mental disorder and need hospital treatment. This information looks at when and how the courts use this section. It explains what your rights are and what could happen after hospital. This information is for people who are 18 or over and affected by mental illness in England. It is also for their loved ones and carers and mental health professionals.
