Can you get PIP for depression and mental health?
Yes, you can get Personal Independence Payment (PIP) for depression and other mental health conditions if your daily life or mobility is affected.
What is PIP?
PIP is a UK benefit for people aged 16 to State Pension age who need extra help because of a long-term health condition or disability - including mental health problems like depression. You can get PIP whether you’re working or not.
How does PIP work?
PIP has two parts:
- Daily living: For help with everyday tasks, such as preparing food, managing medication, or communicating.
- Mobility: For help with getting around, including difficulties caused by mental health conditions.
You may get one or both parts, depending on how your mental health affects you. Mental health conditions are treated just as seriously as physical ones.
How do you apply?
- Contact the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) to start your claim.
- Fill in a form explaining how your mental health affects your daily life.
- You may need to attend an assessment.
- Evidence from healthcare professionals or people who know you well can help your application.
If your claim is turned down, you can appeal - and many appeals are successful.
