Ilminster/Chard and Langport Mental Health Carers are a group that has been established and meeting for many years for mutual support and the sharing of information. They are all carers of people with lived experience of mental illness and have offered invaluable help and understanding to those in a similar position for many, many years. It has come the time for Mavis and Roger, who have been running the group for many years to move onto pastures new and this will happen after the summer of 2023 after a boat trip in August and a summer luncheon in early September. The group, therefore, is looking for new members, including those willing to help organise. It can be very informal – the group have been meeting at a garden centre café these past years - but it would be lovely to keep the wonderful legacy of this caring, warm and longstanding group going. The Support Squad strive to bring together St. Mabyn residents and the surrounding local communities by promoting well-being and helping members of the group build valuable friendships. This peer support group is for family members or others affected by the serious mental illness of someone close to them. Those with a leading role in the group are all peer volunteers whose aim is to hold a safe space for people to come together in a relaxed and welcoming environment. Being outside together while working on and tending to an allotment can hopefully alleviate stress and there is also a shed where members can meet to create and share artwork, with the added bonus of a pleasant outside seating area. The group will signpost information where possible but mainly endeavour to offer a space where members can share experiences while doing something together, hence the name The Sharing Space. The use of the allotment for the group has been generously made possible by the committee of the Falmouth & District Allotment and Garden Society. Public toilets are a short walk away but there are none on site. There is provision for making hot drinks in the shed, but members should bring their own refreshments or packed lunch. Gardening gloves are also a good shout!
