Digital mental health support

Benefits, risks, and safe use of AI tools

This page links to our trusted advice on using digital tools like apps and AI chatbots to support your mental health. It shares the benefits and risks and gives guidance on using them safely.

Digital mental health support is becoming more common because it’s quick, easy to use, and available anytime. Tools like mental health apps and AI chatbots mean people can get help without long waiting times or talking face-to-face. Which can feel uncomfortable for some.

This is important because mental health services in England can be very busy. Online mental health support helps fill this gap and can make people feel less alone. While these tools do not replace real people, they can be a helpful first step to improve mental wellbeing.

However, AI mental health tools can sometimes give wrong or unsafe advice. They may not understand complex feelings, and there can be privacy risks with personal data. So, you might find it hard to know what tools to use and how to use them safely.

That is why we have published digital mental health support guidance.

We have published the following guidance:

Looking after your mental health can feel challenging, especially when support is hard to access. This page brings together trusted online tools and apps you can use at your own pace, in your own space. They can help you feel more supported and in control.
