How long do you stay in hospital for mental health?

The length of your stay in a mental health hospital depends on your needs and whether you are admitted voluntarily or detained under the Mental Health Act.

Voluntary admission

If you go into hospital voluntarily, you can leave at any time. Your stay is based on what you and your care team agree is best for your recovery.

Detained under the Mental Health Act

If you are detained (sectioned), the hospital can require you to stay. The length of your stay depends on which section of the Act applies. For example, Section 35 allows for up to 28 days, which can be extended if needed for assessment.

Discharge

You will only be discharged when health professionals believe you are well enough, or if you successfully appeal your detention.

Typical durations

Voluntary: As long as needed, with the right to leave at any time.

Detained: Duration set by the Mental Health Act section, often starting with days or weeks, and can be extended if necessary.
