Can people with schizophrenia drive?

Yes, people living with schizophrenia can drive, but there are important legal and safety steps to follow.

What you need to know

If you have schizophrenia and want to drive, you must tell the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency (DVLA). This applies whether you’re applying for a new license or already have one.

The DVLA will assess your fitness to drive, which may include a medical check or driving assessment. They might issue a license for one to five years, or withdraw your license if you’re not fit to drive.

Medical advice and medication

Always follow your doctor’s advice about driving. Some medications for schizophrenia can affect your ability to drive safely, so talk to your doctor about any side effects.

Insurance and legal requirements

You must also inform your insurance company about your condition. Not doing so could make your policy invalid. If your condition improves, you can reapply for your licence after surrendering it for medical reasons.
