We respond to new CQC report

23 October 2026

The latest annual review by the Care Quality Commission reveals rising pressures on mental health services, with services struggling to meet demand.

Jeremy Bernhaut, Director of Policy and Practice at Rethink Mental Illness, said:

“Today’s CQC report highlights how demand is growing sharply for mental health support, and already overstretched services are struggling to cope. It is particularly concerning to see so many children and young people waiting for support at a critical age when early help can prevent mental ill-health from becoming more severe and having a lasting impact into adulthood.

"We remain deeply worried that people in crisis are struggling to access urgent care, when delays can have life-threatening consequences. Equally troubling is the finding that people with complex mental health needs are falling through gaps in the system after leaving hospital. The challenges highlighted in this report show why mental health social care must be a key focus of the Casey Review, given the vital role it plays in helping people leave hospital safely, stay connected to support, and avoid falling back into crisis.

"As the report highlights, there are encouraging examples of services working more closely with voluntary and community organisations to support people locally, and we know that the new community mental health centres are showing promising results. But while progress is being made in some areas, it is not yet enough to meet the scale of need. Greater focus on prevention is key, and the upcoming 10-year mental health strategy must set out how the root causes of mental ill-health will be tackled, alongside clear routes into timely treatment where needed.”
