If you have a friend or family member who is affected by mental health issues, and you have concerns about their mental or emotional wellbeing, you may need support yourself. You can contact us directly, or a GP or mental health staff can refer you to us. You don’t need to live with the person you care for, to consider yourself a ‘carer’ or be recognised officially as a carer to access our service. We offer one to one meetings and telephone support as well as group support, access to short breaks, and have a good knowledge of local services which we can share with you. Interpreters can be arranged. There is a specific worker who liaises with psychiatric wards at Southmead and Callington Road hospitals, and we co-facilitate groups and courses with statutory mental health staff.
We aim to help you to share your concerns, improve communication, and maintain your own mental and emotional wellbeing.
Individual support including emotional support, access to carers assessments and signposting to other organisations
Groups where you can meet other people in a similar situations. There are 3 support groups: a monthly siblings group specifically for brothers and sisters, and two groups held monthly in south and north Bristol in the evening. There are also 2 carers art groups and a gardening group.
Education for carers. We run an educational programme called ‘Caring and Coping’ twice a year aimed at those new to mental health services or who have recently taken on a caring role.
Family work for psychosis which provides a structured, solution focussed approach involving the whole family.
Reference group which is a forum to identify barriers experienced by carers, and provide a collective voice for carers in shaping mental health services
