Rethink Mental Illness responds to senior family judge Sir James Munby's comments on the case of a young woman who may be discharged form secure care, despite still being at risk, as there is no other appropriate care available.
Danielle Hamm, Associate Director of Policy and Campaigns at Rethink Mental Illness said,
“While we aren’t privy to all the details of this shocking and tragic case, this appears to be another example of the very real human cost of poor mental health provision. We know many people fall through the cracks when they don’t meet the criteria for existing, rigidly structured services and when there is a total lack of appropriate placements. Too often there is just nowhere for them to go.
“It is absolutely vital that commissioners make sure that services in their area meet the need and no one is left with no where to turn.”
