County Durham Advocacy Service provides independent individual advocacy support and representation to service users. This involves ascertaining service users' wishes, feelings, beliefs, and values both verbally (for example during care review meetings or other care and support meetings) and in writing (for example writing letters on behalf of service users).

County Durham Advocacy Service has also been commissioned to provide IMHA (Independent Mental Health Advocacy) for anyone one who lives in County Durham, is detained and the Mental Health Act 1983 and has the right to an advocate. This involves making sure those detained are aware of their rights, supporting them in getting their views across to their care team, attending Ward Rounds and Tribunals and helping them access their medical notes.

This service is free to access and independent of other services.
