My sister became unwell at 16. Her behaviour became erratic, her thoughts muddled and her speech disjointed. It was schizophrenia. Back then people just didn’t talk about mental health. We felt all alone. I realised that if I was going to be a long term carer, I had to look after myself, too. Those who care for family or friends often don’t see themselves as carers. So it’s very important for them to have support. I learned so much about supporting her through Rethink Mental Illness. I now run their London siblings support group. It’s been very helpful to connect, swap stories and share knowledge with others. We often share deep emotional issues - many of us can’t do this anywhere else.
All the money we raise for this appeal goes towards our support groups, helping people like Eleanor.
Big news: if you donate on the Big Give website it's all MATCHED by funders like the generous Candis magazine.
ONE donation, TWICE the impact! Can you help?
If you can't give today - no problem! Instead could you share our Big Give page with your friends?
