Get information and advice - Sibling toolkit
About this toolkit.
If you have a brother or sister with experience of mental illness, the resources in this Sibling Toolkit will help you to think about ways you can support your brother or sister, things you can do to look after yourself and where you and your family can get information or support.
They will help you look at the skills and knowledge you already have and what you might like to work on in the future.
How you can use the toolkit
- You can use each resource in this toolkit as a standalone resource and work through them when, and if, you feel they are relevant to you.
- The way you use these tools will depend on your individual situation and they have been designed to be used flexibly. Some of the resources might not be useful for everyone and we’ve explained when they might benefit you.
- Some of the resources, such as the tool ‘Reflecting on what has happened’ can be revisited and added to over time. When working through these types of tools, you might like to use a notebook or Word document to save your notes and thoughts so you can look back and add to them later.
- There are other resources in this toolkit which you could go through with your sibling, for instance the ‘Preparing for an appointment’ tool or it might be that they would like to use these tools for themselves.
