Most people have difficulty getting to sleep at some point in their lives, but this does not usually point to a serious mental illness. Difficulty sleeping can be caused by various factors including anxiety, stress and changes in life-style.
However, in combination with other symptoms, long-lasting insomnia can be one of several symptoms pointing to a serious illness, including (but not limited to) anxiety disorder, bipolar disorder and depression.
If you are experiencing on-going problems with sleeping, please make an appointment to see your GP.
