Newham Council accused of 'social cleansing' of tenants

A London council has been accused of starting "social cleansing" in the capital by asking a Stoke-on-Trent housing association to take on up to 500 families on housing benefit.

Newham Council says it can no longer afford to house tenants on its waiting list in private accommodation.

The gap between market rents and the housing allowance is too big, it says.

But the association says such a move could mark the start of "thousands of needy people" being dumped elsewhere.

Labour MPs say the decision to seek accommodation outside London is proof that the government's policy of capping housing benefit is already "beginning to unravel".

i can see this happening with morgages not availuble ulless you have a ÂŁ30.000. diposit more people in work are forced to rent. push,s rents through the roof. IF your are on houseing benifits an the owner of the house want massive rent increase, the council will not be able to give you the full houseing benifit which means forceing you out to a more undisirable area , or you struggle to pay the difference which is highly unlikely , either way your screwed Posted Image

I remember saying government plans amounted to social cleansing with housing benefit reform. If they put a cap on benefits, who will be affected? Those with very large families, those living in wealthy areas, the disabled in wealthy areas, the disabled with families in wealthy areas. That benefits cap was always about 'social engineering' in my opinion because it would be 'housing benefit' taking up most of that cap, meaning people would have to move anyway. What a horrible bunch of 'ideologues' we have in government, truly a bunch of amoral, dishonest extremists.

Yes I think I am.

I am a born and bred londoner. I think it is entirely wrong that I am being driven out by the colonisation and invasion of the 'rich and wealthy' who make prices impossible for the local inhabitants. I consider myself in exile from London and feel an affinity of emotion with the diaspora.

There's a village called Little London around here, it is a village though.

With relatives in Brum you can move to Walsall or Perry Bar and find some cheap housing and still have your bearings surely?

Stoke is quite a rough spot. I used to go clubbing to Shelley's in Stoke but that was quite a different experience than visiting with opposing football fans.

Handsworth is alright these days. Good mixture of old and new with the rebuilding after the riots.

Whilst some can move, and would even see it has a fresh start a lot of people in rented accomodation have MH, even if currently low maintenance and stable, and the upheaval could force a relapse and with this kind of trauma a return to being a revolving door case. So what are the MH charities saying? Naught... next to naught. They've got to think about their funding afterall.

consdiering how long it takes to sort out mental health care and get good services in place, being forced to move to a different area will be a nightmare just from that angle.

They're shutting services left right and centre, so that won't be such a issue in future.

If I lived in a place like Newham, then I would welcome the chance to be moved out; in fact if I was to live somewhere like that (and I have up untill not that long ago) then it would be extremely bad for my mental health.

I'd love to live in the countryside, but I can't drive. :( I passed through Newham the other day & it made me feel sick; each to his/her own though, it's just that personally those kind of areas depress me.
