Hi. Im 27 years old. I have recently been told from a psychiatrist that i was misdiagnosed with bipolar and has been changed to primary psychosis secondary schizoaffective, possible paranoid schizophrenia.

It all makes sense now, the tablets for bipolar never worked. Just started risperidone.

I'm finding it hard to come to terms with all this to be fair, as i've been like this since being 8 yrs old, going through life thinking what i thought was normal, this is why it got missed before.
Wondering what do i do now! lol

Thanks for reading!

Hi Zara, welcome!

A good diagnosis can really help, especially if that means better targeted treatment - good luck with it :)

its was really useful for me wen i got a similar diagnosis i cud use it as a starting point . i realized my so called strange behaviour was not me but an illness and i think its important to distinguish between the two. from that point i think it was wen stable learning to deal with the meds and finding coping mechanisms to help me through this illness where 1 part of my brain seemed to b be fighting with the other . ur on a journey of self discovery i think and experiences either make or break u u av to be positive and lay foundations through ur experiences to make u more resilient and stronger. u av to want to make a difference to ur life and cling to hope that u can do that . as i say it may not be tomorrow or the next day but time changes and there is light at the end of every tunnel if u av the strength and determination to get there .ur goals might not be to rulle the country but watever u think is feasible for u small steps ur not in a race or competition there is only 1 player in this and there can only 1 person who wins. if u feel strong enough id suggest volunteering its a grt way of gain confidence mixing with ppl and gaining a feeling of worthwhile . it was definitely a help to me on my journey ....gd luck anyway !!!

They kept me on it!! told me the side effects will wear off in time, and take the tablet earlier in the evening so it wears off by the time i wake up. The dosage needs to be upped tonight. I'm not looking forward to it at all.
We discussed the meds, she explained 5 "atypical" they can use, and said, this one will make you sleep, this one will stop you from sleeping, that leaves these 2, and risperidone was better for my needs aparently! arripirozole was the other one that was left to try.

Just hope the side effects will subside and start working. only been on them 7 days but really want to be stable

when they get u on right dose and ur body adjust ul be ok . ul hopefully strt to make progress on ur recovery its slow going but fingers crossed for u .i was told everybody metabolism is different and the effects of the drugs on that person can be totally different to another persons. it does take time to adjust to meds so u av to be patient but keep trying to push urself as much as u possibly can and i know how difficult it is. its gd to get out of ur comfort zone! am sure ul get there cos u want to get well and unfortunately meds are a necessary part of process ( having a gd perspective and lifestyle are others in my opinion).
