From 1st November in GP's surgeries around England, we are showing this advert on a special TV network called The Life Channel. It's based on the experiences of Terry Bowyer, who's also one of the new Schizophrenia Commissioners.

Have you seen the new advert? What do you think? Does the advert explain enough about what Rethink Mental Illness does? Let us know by leaving your comments below.

theres that channel at my gps, it'll just make me feel uncomfortable whilst i'm going through that hour wait, uncomfortable and wondering if it's a subtle message every one in the waiting room knows about me

I don't use the s word when talking to the receptionist in case i'm overheard, it's difficult to argue your more of a priority if you don't as well

We don't have TVs at our surgery, sadly. Though I would probably get paranoid if it did come on the TV whilst I was around.

But, if it was my sister watching, on her own, it may be good. She has a dad, sister and son all with sz. She should probably come on here for support!

No TV at my doctors either. :)

My surgery doesn't have TV or Radio, it could do with it.

Is there a link/YouTube where we can view it? Thanks :)

Forget that message .... I have now watched it. It didn't show on my phone.

I live in my own little world. But it's OK, everyone knows me here.

I don't know but it appears from this thread that very few doctors surgeries actually have TV now. Wouldn't the money spent on this have been better spent in some other way, like a leaflet campaign, to greater effect? :rolleyes:

Chemical zombie. The ideal compliant citizen. They would want everyone taking these drugs eventually. Good thing the ship is sinking. :rolleyes:

I suppose those who are ill in a chronic way or suffer episodic relapses haven't turned their lives around enough? The few who have some kind of semi-permanent recovery have? I guess you could say the same with cancer or any other illness? Your cancer seems to have come back you havn't quite turned your life around enough? There is a moralistic undertone to this 'turning your life around' that doesn't sound right at all. I'm well, if the pressures and stressors of external changes cause me to become unwell, they can only up my meds. I'll sleep more and be even less unable to comply with the demands. Become homeless without meds and then either have a catastrophic relapse or something. Can I be morally judged in that the coming changes would be not of my making? I neither caused my susceptiblity to stress induced mental illhealth nor the breaking point at which I descend into illness. Service users have a obligation to maintain a stable well being once they have been given the means, and society as a obligation to maintain those means. And not push unrealistic expectations simply because a few are fortunate enough to buck the trend. If 85% of people with serious mental illness are unemployed and trapped on slave labour schemes or low pay it isn't about someone turning their lives around....it is a massive moral & social failure, on the part of the larger society, that needs to be directly addressed by Rethink. This video implies the individual with alittle help can turn their lives around, almost putting all the responsibility for success & failure on the service user. Would that happen if 85% of the total population became unemployed leaving the economy on a catastrophic life support? If 25 million became unemployed I'm sure blame wouldn't be directed at them and no one in their right mind would say it is just a case of turning their lives around? This advert is a blatent case of deceptive marketing for workfare schemes that will only benefit others, and not service users IMO.

The phrase 'turned his life around' does rather imply there is something criminal/immoral about having a mental illness.
The slick, and some might say superficial,nature of the ad also plants into people's minds that schizophrenia/severe mental illness is easy to get over.

Yet inside there is this perpetual nagging doubt;
the feeling we are possessed by a 'subtle lack of togetherness'
