Hi

I recently wrote a song about a long term mental health patient.
As I state in the video info, I didn't intend to write about that subject, it just came out like that.
It is a sad song so I hope it doesn't upset anyone on the forum.

It recently came 2nd in a song writing contest, and I've had loads of good feedback wherever I've played it, so it must be at least ok (I'm not the most confident person).

Thanks numenoftheinkblood

Took me a while to find your comment (inside the quote).
Glad you like it, thanks for your comments.
I was hoping the song makes the statement that a lot of people in care don't have any say in how they are treated and the most effective treatment is actual honest care.

Cheers

Craig

Music is very calming. The lyrics, again, are sad but true. Well done and thanks

Hey Craig,

Wow! Congratulations, Craig, I totally enjoyed the whole album. The arrangements are terrific. The words and music work beautifully together in such a great melodic spell-binding way. Your voice, as I've said earlier, is other-worldly and touches my heart. I look forward to listening to the other albums. Fantastic. You are an inspiration. Sorry about no money here or I'd definitely send you some. What a wonderful gift you've given us. Thanks so, so much. Did I mention I loved it?
Take care and be fine as you are. All the best,
Numen

Thanks Numen
You might just have got the prize for my best ever comment.
Thanks very much.
As I mentioned before, you can download it free if you want.
Just click on "buy now" and put 0 in the amount.

Cheers again

Please could you post the lyrics
I am trying to be more honest and open about my own mental health in order to help others with their mental health because for me the stigma and prejudice of having the illness is worse than the illness itself!
That's why I took the PLEDGE to help end Mental Health Discrimination!

Hi earthling thanks
I'm also a big Bowie fan, with a few Bowie covers in my youtube uploads.

The album version of "How are they to know" in the bandcamp link has lyrics.
Here's the link again.

How are they to know 05:32
OH I LIKE THE WAY THE SUN, CASTS THE SHADOWS OF MY BARS ACROSS MY BED SHEETS
IN THE MORNING AS I RISE UP, RUB MY EYES

AND THE NURSE RETURNS ONCE MORE, GENTLY PLACES DOWN MY FOOD TRAY THEN SHE LOOKS UP WITH A SMILE AND WALKS OUT BACKWARDS, LOCKS THE DOOR

(CHORUS)
AND THE HALLWAYS ALWAYS BARE, PEOPLE STARING AT EACH OTHER OR THE FLOORBOARDS
WALKING IN A LINE TO THE COBBLESTONE COURTYARD
WHERE OUR DUTIES FOR THE DAY WILL GIVE US PURPOSE
WILL IT HELP US, WILL THEY KNOW (DO THEY CARE)

HOW LONG NOW, I’VE BEEN HERE FOR SO LONG I CAN’T REMEMBER
IT MIGHT HAVE BEEN NOVEMBER OR DECEMBER
MY MOTHER BROUGHT SOME PRESENTS FOR THE CHRISTMAS DO

THAT WAS WHEN I GOT MY FIRST BIKE, I COULDN’T REALLY USE IT IN THE COURTYARD
THE NURSES LET ME SIT ON IT AT BREAKFAST TIME
AS THEY FED ME AND THE GROWNUPS WITH A SPOON

AND ANOTHER DAY BEGINS, AND THE NURSES AND THE PATIENTS DO EXACTLY WHAT THEY’RE TOLD TO BY THE ONES WHO KNOW, OR WHO THINK THEY DO

(CHORUS 2)

AND MOTHER VISITS ME, SHE BRINGS ME FLOWERS AND SHE STAYS FOR TEA
BUT THE NURSES ONLY BOTHER ME, AND SHE CAN’T STAY FOR VERY LONG

AND I WISH THAT I COULD STAY WITH YOU, I CAN’T TALK TO YOU OR HEAR YOU
BUT BY SIMPLY BEING NEAR YOU, I CAN START TO FEEL AT EASE

AND AS THE YEARS PASS I SIT AND LOOK OUT AT THE LONG GRASS
AND THEY KEEP THINKING THAT THEY’RE HELPING ME, BUT HOW ARE THEY TO KNOW

AND I WISH THAT I COULD STAY WITH YOU, I CAN’T TALK TO YOU OR HEAR YOU
BUT BY SIMPLY BEING NEAR YOU, I CAN START TO FEEL AT EASE
I am trying to be more honest and open about my own mental health in order to help others with their mental health because for me the stigma and prejudice of having the illness is worse than the illness itself!

Hi again earthling
I posted the youtube video link last year.
The reason for my recent post is to give the link to my album version which is different from the youtube video.

It's a good website - lots of interesting content

I've only listened to this one song so far but I like the arrangement on the album version it's strangely evocative and child like.

reminds me a bit of:

Amazing - that's not exactly an obvious Bowie song to cover.

Did it go down well?

It's quite an intriguing song isn't it.

I'm a massive Bowie fan and I play some of his less well known songs.
Like "After all", "Slip away" and "never let you down".
Most folk clubs I play have an average age of maybe 60 or over (being careful here).
They are always amazed when I tell them it's a Bowie song.
I played "There is a happy land" on Friday at North berwick folk club.

Wow

"There is a happy land" is one of my favourite Bowie songs.
I'd love to hear that played live one day.

Do you ever perform in the South East?

I live in Tonbridge, Kent

No just Central Scotland, but I play at lots of folk clubs from the East coast to the West.
Here's my Craig Hood plays Bowie playlist.
