FAQs for siblings
My sister is recovering from schizophrenia and we're both really keen to help other people – and particularly the brothers and sisters whose lives can also be turned upside down even though they aren’t the ones who have the illness. What can we do?
There are lots of things you could do and hearing about schizophrenia from someone who has it or their close family members is a really positive way of helping people comes to terms with it.
There are several ways that you could do this:
- Get involved in Rethink Sibling’s, we need people to be part of the Steering Group, to write the ‘blog’, put together information sheets and newsletters etc.
- Set up a Rethink Sibling Group – research clearly shows that an accepting and knowledgeable group of people really helps with people’s recovery. See the ‘group’ section on Rethink’s website www.rethink.org for more information or contact the Membership & Participation team (involvement@rethink.org )
- Become a Rethink Activist. Rethink are always looking for people to get involved in a whole range of activities, including using people’s personal experiences to help to train and educate, help with research projects and increasingly to do mental health promotion to help combat the stigma and prejudice that surrounds mental illness
- Do some fundraising! Rethink Siblings has ambitions to hold national conferences and events to support siblings and challenge the stigma that surrounds mental illness – but we need to raise money to make this happen. Contact the Membership & Participation team for further information.
