Psychosis
Psychosis is the term used to describe a mental illness that seriously affects the way a person thinks or feel.
If your brother or sister is experiencing psychosis, they may think that they can hear or see things that are not there which are called hallucinations, or they may have unusual beliefs that cannot be explained, such as believing that they are being followed by the government or talked to by aliens. They might also have a confused way of thinking or talking and they might believe that people can hear their thoughts or find it difficult to order the way they are thinking.
It might also affect your sibling's emotions, so they might have odd feelings that don't fit with how they would normally feel, for instance feeling stressed and anxious when everyone else is happy, or feeling extremely down or depressed, or very happy or high.
You might find it difficult to talk to your sibling when they are experiencing psychosis, for instance you might not be able to follow what they are saying, or you might disagree with their beliefs. It is ok to feel confused about this and you must remember that psychosis can be treated like anything else and there are lots of ways that your sibling can get help.
If you, your sibling or your parents are worried that your brother or sister is experiencing psychosis, you should contact your GP for help.
