Sibling feelings
When your brother or sister is experiencing, or has experienced a mental illness, you might feel a lot of different emotions and feelings about what has happened, but you are not alone.
Young siblings have told us that they go through a lot of confusing emotions and these can sometimes change, for instance when you know that your brother or sister is experiencing a mental illness, it might explain some of the ways they have been acting which might have been upsetting you before. You might also be worried about what this all means for your sibling and your family and who you can talk to, but you are not alone.
Here are some of the things that young siblings say they feel:
- sadness, grief and loss around what has happened
- concerned about who to talk to
- worried about developing a mental illness
- angry, confused or guilty about why this has happened
- hopeful for the future and proud of your sibling's achievements
- upset or jealous about the attention their sibling gets from parents
