John's Story

Two people talking

John did not want to receive a personal budget or receive direct payments, so he found out about the other options.

John had been receiving support from his social worker under the Care Programme Approach (CPA) for a number of years. He was told that he needed to fill in a Self Assessment Questionnaire in order to receive a personal budget to pay for his social care needs. John was very concerned as he didn’t want to have to deal with direct payments and thought the support he received from his social worker would stop.

After speaking again to his social worker he found out that the SAQ was just part of the assessment process and that if he was eligible for services he didn’t have to take the money as a direct payment. His local authority actually had a number of different options for paying for social care services aside from receiving direct payments.
