Stopping benzodiazepine treatment

If you have been taking benzodiazepines regularly for more than 4-6 weeks, it is best not to stop taking them suddenly.

It can be possible to develop a dependence on the drug (an addiction which can be physiological and psychological). Stopping suddenly can cause withdrawal effects so it is better to stop taking them gradually over a number of weeks or months. It is important to get advice from your doctor before stopping your benzodiazepine medication.

Some of the more common withdrawal side effects include:

  • insomnia (trouble sleeping)
  • anxiety
  • shaking
  • sweating
  • tension
  • poor concentration
  • panic attacks
  • nausea
About 1 in 3 people will experience no symptoms at all, 1 in 3 will experience symptoms for a few weeks and 1 in 3 can experience worse symptoms.
