Self-management steering group

The Steering Group takes an overall view of the self-management project and ensures that the views of people with experience of schizophrenia and other severe mental illness remain central to the project.

The aims of the Steering Group are as follows:

  1. To provide perspectives of people who have a diagnosis of schizophrenia/other severe mental illness or who experience mad or psychotic states.
  2. To be kept informed of the progress of the project.
  3. To offer advice on the future directions of the project.
  4. To support the Project Manager in his work.
  5. To oversee the work of the various working groups.

How can I get involved?

The Steering Group is only open to 'users' and ex-'users' of mental health services

The Steering Group may be of interest to you if you can answer yes to the following questions:
  • Do you have some experience of self-management?
  • Do you have an interest in helping other people self-manage?
  • Would you like to make a contribution to a ground-breaking self-management project?

You will need to be able and willing:

  • to attend four meetings a year, in London (expenses paid)
  • to take part in the group discussion
  • to read papers sent to you and comment on them
  • to give and receive comment and criticism (and praise) in a constructive way
  • to respect the other members of the group, including maintaining confidentiality.

We are keen to have diverse experiences represented within these working groups, and welcome people from all cultural and ethnic groups.

What will I get out of it?

There is no payment for taking part in this group, but any expenses you incur will be reimbursed. What you will get out of it, hopefully, is the experience of doing an interesting piece of work with like-minded people, and knowing that you are contributing to a project which aims to help others live better with a mental illness diagnosis.

Contact us

If you are interested in taking part, please write saying a little bit about yourself, why you are interested, and what you would bring to the group.

If you want to talk about it first, please telephone or email us at self-management@rethink.org

We look forward to hearing from you!
