Recovery and self-management

"I lost hope after being in hospital, so it was very important that staff held hope for me. Belief from others makes you feel bigger. Yes that’s really important - just having someone there who believes in you, saying things like ‘this will pass’ and ‘you’ve been here before - you’ll get through it.'"
- Quote from service user in the Rethink Recovery Report

Recovery

ShootRecovery can be defined as a personal process of tackling the adverse impacts of experiencing mental health problems, despite their continuing or long-term presence. It involves personal development and change, including acceptance that there are problems to face; a sense of involvement and control over one's life; and the cultivation of hope and using support from others.

Self-Management

Self-management is all about taking control of your life and being active in your own recovery. Thus a decision to self-manage can be a key factor contributing to a person’s recovery.
