Budgeting

When you are living on a limited income budgeting is a good way of money management. A budget is a a list of people and things you will have to pay and how you intend to pay them.
Writing out a list of income and outgoings is the first step to producing a budget.

Budgeting can also mean living on less money than you currently spend. When you make a budget you need to list the payments you need to make and the money you spend in order of priority. Priority items include your mortgage, rent, fuel, council tax, any court fines and any maintenance for children. They are a priority because the consequences of not paying them are serious and could lead to your being homeless, or without heating, or in some cases imprisoned.

Budgeting doesn't mean that you are not able to enjoy life.

Many people who live on a budget have an active social life and enjoy treats now and again. If you like going to play bingo and going to the cinema, limit these trips to once a week and decide a limit to the amount you are going to spend. Contact your local tourist information office or library for news of free events going on in your area.

Many people buy things when they are depressed or ill to feel better.

However, there are many different ways of treating yourself on a budget. Try treating yourself to a hot relaxing bath and a chocolate bar or hot drink.

Budget planners

One way of assessing the amount of money you have coming in and going out, is through using a budget planner to write down your weekly or monthly costs. It can be uprising how quickly things can add up, and so this type of sheet can often help to highlight areas where you could restrict your spending if needed.

The National Debtline website has a free budget planner you can download and complete.
