Health insurance

Insurers can refuse to cover conditions which already exist (pre-existing conditions) when you apply for health insurance.

There must be reasonable grounds if you are refused health insurance. This should be objective evidence that your condition increases the risk of you making a claim.  In order to determine this, doctors may be asked to write a medical report about you.

It may be helpful to talk to your GP when you are considering a health insurance policy.  If your GP is asked to write a medical report, you do have the right to see this.

If you develop a mental illness and already have health insurance, you may only be covered for a limited time.  The decisions as to how much care and the total cost of the care you can receive are dependent on the individual circumstances.
