Making the most of life with mental illness

Many people with severe mental illness have found their own ways of coping, both to manage the symptoms of their mental illness and to make the most of their lives.

This approach to their condition is sometimes known as ‘self-management’. Rather than relying on professionals or others to manage their condition, they have learnt some useful ways to manage it themselves. People who have learnt self-management techniques feel that they have made better decisions about their lives than other people ever could have done and they have increased their self-esteem by taking control of their lives.
