Financial help when studying

There are a range of grants, loans and benefits that students can claim while in higher education.

WhiteboardYou may be eligible for one of the following, though this is by no means guaranteed:

  • Access to Learning Fund
  • Student Loans
  • Sponsorship
  • Career Development Loans
  • Maintenance grants

The Directgov website has a variety of financial information that may be helpful for students. As well as information on general student finance, there is also information on support for disabled people at college or university. Disabled students may be able to claim additional funding such as Disabled Students’ Allowance.

Disabled students may be eligible to make a claim for certain welfare benefits, such as Disability Living Allowance or Employment and Support Allowance. Employment and Support Allowance is a benefit paid to those who have a limited capability for work. It was introduced in October 2008. Before this time, those who were unable to work would have claimed for Incapacity Benefit or Income Support.

Because the benefits system is complicated you are recommended to seek benefits advice (e.g. at your local Citizens Advice Bureau or other organisation that provides benefits advice).

In addition to grants, loans and benefits, as a student you will not have to pay Council tax (if you live with other students). People on certain benefits or who have a low income may be able to apply for help with prescription costs, dental and optician charges.
