SUPEREDEN - Sustaining Positive Engagement and Recovery

The next step after Early Intervention for Psychosis

three friends, 2 girls, one boy, talkingAs part of the 'National Plan' for the NHS in 2003 early intervention in psychosis services were set up to provide more targeted and holistic support for young people (aged 14-35) with psychosis. There are now over 150 of these teams in the country. It is crucial that positive outcomes are continued as the young people leave these time-limited specialist services. SUPEREDEN is a multi-site national project and it aims to:

  1. Provide the evidence base to develop the ‘next generation’ of early intervention in psychosis services which will ensure that the gains made after treatment, are maintained once service users are discharged.
  2. Enable development of a ‘stepped care’ model to improve the targeting of interventions appropriate to emerging needs, illness trajectory and user preference.
  3. Evaluate a new intervention to improve structured activity levels in those who reveal poor early recovery.
The project will involve following up clients who were initially part of the National EDEN project, for a further two years, many of whom may now have been discharged from EI teams to other local services; and conducting a randomised controlled trial focused on emerging early disability in this group of young people.

Rethink’s research team is involved to support in particular the project’s qualitative research aspects and the involvement of young people with lived experience of psychosis to guide the study through a Lived Experience Advisory Panel (LEAP).
