Mental health promotion

We as an organisation believe everyone has mental health needs, whether or not they have a diagnosis of mental illness.  Mental and emotional health promotion involves action to enhance the mental health of individuals, families, organisations or communities.

Rethink are committed to understanding the connection between we all have mental health / emotional health and severe mental illness.  We are dedicated to promote and support recovery and reduce the barriers that prevent recovery.

Mental health promotion works at three levels:  at the personal, social and political and is relevant to the whole population.

  • Personally by increasing emotional resilience through intervention to promote self-esteem, life and coping skills.
  • Socially by increasing social inclusion and participation, improving neighbourhood environments and developing health and social services which support mental health.
  • Politically by initiatives to reduce discrimination and inequalities and to promote access to education, meaningful employment, housing, services and support for those with a diagnosis of mental ill health.

The main areas of work that Rethink’s Mental Health Promotion Team will be looking at over the next 3 years will be:  young people, physical health, employment, with a cross cutting theme of anti-stigma and anti-discrimination.
