Carers and Confidentiality Project

The development of an online learning resource to enable health professionals to share information more effectively with carers

2 men at Ealing Carer support group

In 2004 Rethink were commissioned by the Department of Health, through their NIHR SDO R&D (National Institute for health Research, Service Delivery Organisation and Research and Development) programme, to undertake research to identify best practice when mental health professionals share information with carers.

At the end of this research we asked if we could take forward one of the project recommendations: training for mental health professionals to support them to feel more confident and competent in sharing appropriate information with carers. The Rethink Confidentiality training project is this follow-on piece of work.

The aim of this project is to produce a set of training materials with carers, service users and professionals, which can be used to train mental health professionals in the various aspects of information sharing, across different settings. The project started in June 2007 and we the final resources will be launched in Spring 2010.

The resources that have been produced are an e-learning package containing both information resources and an interactive 9-lesson course based upon scenarios provided by carers, service users and professionals. The resource was piloted over the summer 2009 and we received positive feedback from participating mental health professionals.
