Devon Mental Health Advocacy Service

Devon Mental Health Advocacy Service supports people to deal with issues ranging from hospital admission to complaints and concerns with their care and treatment. Our Advocacy services are governed by principles based on independence, empowerment, impartiality, confidentiality, inclusion and free access.

The service is available to people in Devon aged 18 and over. The service supports both people in the community and people who qualify for an Independent Mental Health Advocate under the 2007 Mental Health Act.

The Advocates are able to help with a wide variety of issues including:

- Ward rounds, reviews meetings, tribunals and other difficult settings
- To help and support you to challenge decisions about your mental health care that you may disagree with
- To support you with contacts with your CPN, AMP and Psychiatrist

An Advocate will:

- Listen in confidence
- Support you with your choices
- Ensure your views are expressed and understood

An Advocate will not:

- Make decisions for you
- Talk to others about you without your permission
- Provide counselling
- Offer befriending
- Provide legal and benefit
