Stigma Shout
Nearly 4000 people affected by mental health problems across England took part in Stigma Shout - the largest ever survey about stigma and discrimination. Results showed that 87% of people said they had direct personal experience of stigma and discrimination. Stigma Shout is a unique piece of research that helped to shape the Time to Change programme, and in particular the national anti-stigma marketing campaign.
I wanted to be involved because mental illness is still really not
talked about. I feel misunderstood and discriminated against because I have an illness, which leaves me feeling very isolated.

What we did
- Stigma Shout survey - 3038 people living with mental health problems and 748 mental health carers completed a survey to tell us about their experiences of stigma and discrimination.
- Stigma Shout workshops - We then held 10 workshops across England involving over 100 people. We wanted to understand and explore in more depth people's experiences and the findings from the survey.

Next steps
The findings from the Stigma Shout survey and workshops helped to make key decisions about who the anti-stigma marketing campaign should target. Research with the target audiences, was also carried out to understand more about their attitudes and behaviour.
