Carers Strategy update
In 2008, the previous government launched a Prime Minister's Strategy for Carers. Now the new coalition Government has updated the Carers Strategy, to make commitments of their own.
What's new in the Carers Strategy?
The updated Carers Strategy, entitled 'Recognised, Valued and Supported' sets out new commitments to carers:
- An additional £400 million over four years from the NHS for carer respite
- Direct Payments for all carers who are eligible by 2013
- Greater support for carers to learn skills and to work
- 'Careful consideration' of Carers' Allowance
We welcome the funding for respite, though we know that this must be ring fenced in some way, or local authorities will not have to spend the money on these services.
This updated strategy recognises that there are particilar issues for carers of people with mental health problems, especially around information sharing. We are pleased to see a commitment that their forthcoming Mental Health Strategy will address these issues.
It is disappointing not to see a stronger commitment to improving financial support for carers.
Rethink is a member of the Standing Commission on Carers which will monitor the delivery of these commitments.
