Is Social Media Good For Mental Health Part One 1

Sun, 13 Mar 2011

iPod whiteFacebook and Twitter gets in the headlines quite a lot these days, but often for the wrong reasons. Cyber-bullying, anorexia forums and suicide probably feature more in press articles about social networking than any positive issues. Experts like the neurologist Baroness Susan Greenfield have chimed in, suggesting that these sites are fundamentally bad for our minds. But couldn't social media like Facebook, Twitter and RethinkTalk be positive sometimes for mental health, even when people are suffering with symptoms like hypomania and paranoia?

The discussion was chaired by Rachel Whitehead, Rethink Senior Media Officer, and the guests were:

  • Seaneen Molloy – mental health activist and blogger
  • Ian – RethinkTalk moderator
  • Krzysztof Bierski – PhD Anthropology student researching social media
  • Dr. Gil Myers - Specialist Registrar in Psychiatry
  • Abigail MacDougall – Rethink Senior Social Media officer
  • Chris Cox – Rethink's Digital Communications Manager
