Local Newspapers
Local newspaper interviews will be very similar to national ones – except they need a local angle to make the story relevant to their readers.
Stuart's experiences with the Dorset Echo...
Stuart Baker-Brown has built up a good relationship with reporter Emily Pykett who works for the Dorset Echo, which has covered his trek to Everest base camp to raise awareness about schizophrenia.
Stuart says: “Emily was very sympathetic and willing to learn about my illness and the stigma and discrimination surrounding it. Emily made me feel easy talking with her. She was keen to hear what I had to say and showed empathy. This helped me to open up to her, explain my key message and keep to a ‘spine’ message.
The interview was face-to-face, took about one hour and led on to other articles in the Dorset Echo by Emily. Sometimes I felt exhausted afterwards but I always felt I could trust Emily to stick to what was agreed and said.
I trusted Emily to report the story correctly and she did. Having someone feel that they trust you can go a long way!”
