Mental Health First Aid

Mental Health First Aid indexDid you know that 1 in 4 people will experience at least one diagnosable mental health problem a year?

Mental Health First Aid (MHFA) is the care and help given to someone experiencing a mental health problem before other help or treatment is available. It will enable you to recognise the signs and symptoms of those affected by mental health problems and offer initial help and guidance towards appropriate professional services.

Rethink have a team of experienced instructors and Trainers who are able to deliver both the Adult and Youth MHFA programmes. If you are interested in a MHFA course there are a number of options.

You can attend one of our two day public courses or we can provide closed courses for your organisation at a location and time agreed with you. For example, the course can be delivered over four half day sessions.

Please contact MHFA@rethink.org for more details about this. We are also currently working on a contract to deliver MHFA courses for Islington NHS Trust and details of courses in the area will be available soon.

Public Courses

The 12-hour national training programme is run over two days.  Delegates will receive a certificate and manual upon successful completion of the course.

What is Mental Health First Aid?

First aid for physical injuries teaches people how to give initial care until medical treatment is accessed, and MHFA does the same for someone experiencing mental ill health.  However, in teaching people how to give initial care, the course also dispel the fears people often have when they come across someone they suspect is experiencing mental ill health or is in distress.

The main aims of MHFA are to:

  • Preserve life where a person may be a danger to themselves
  • Provide help to prevent the mental health problems developing into a more serious state
  • Promote recovery of good mental health
  • Provide comfort to a person experiencing mental ill health
  • Raise awareness of mental health issues in the community
  • Reduce stigma and discrimination

Rethink have a team of experienced trainers, approved to deliver both the Adult and Youth Mental Health First Aid courses. Within the Learning and Young People's Team there are trainers who also have experience delivering training for other projects including Education Not Discrimination and the Uthink young people's programme
