Appropriate adult

Needs to be present when a mentally disordered person is interviewed by the police; an appropriate adult may be:

• a relative, guardian or a person responsible for their care
  
• someone who has had experience of dealing with mentally disordered people, eg an approved social worker, or
  
• some other responsible adult who is not employed by the police.
