Rethink anti stigma film premiere
09 October 2005
October 9th 2005 saw the film premiere of the Rethink anti stigma documentary film ‘A Human Experience' produced by Mark Smith of Focus Line, Nottingham, a Rethink service. The Event took place at the Broadway Cinema, Nottingham and launched the beginning of Rethink Week.
The film interviews three people who have used mental health services. They discuss the impact that their own personal experiences of stigma have had on their family, their friends and themselves. Other areas touched upon include changing attitudes towards mental health and the role of the media in generating and re-enforcing the public perception of mental health.
Mark's aim for the documentary is to raise awareness and understanding of the impact that stigma and discrimination can have on those who use mental health services. He sees it especially important to reach a young audience.
“ Understanding these issues from an early age may help break down any existing stigma and increase mental health awareness as well as highlighting the support networks that are available” he said
After the film showing there was a very lively and interactive question and answer session hosted by Cliff Prior, CEO of Rethink, with Rosemary Munton, CEO of The Mental Health Act commission, Dr Tim Coltan, psychiatrist who took part in the film, and Mark Smith, the film's creator.
The event was a great success with over 130 people attending, a fantastic start to a very successful week for Rethink.
